Will You Build on His Words?

Day 10 of 365 · Episode 1 — The Question You Cannot Avoid

Matthew 7:24–29

Central truth

The proper response to Jesus’ authority is active trust expressed through obedience to what He has said.

The difference between the two builders is not intelligence, appearance, or exposure to Jesus. Both hear. Only one acts.

Jesus therefore ends His sermon with a decision. His listeners cannot remain an audience applauding impressive teaching. They must build.

Obedience Is Not Payment

Obedience does not purchase God’s mercy or prove that we can save ourselves. The sermon begins with people who know their poverty, mourn what is wrong, hunger for righteousness, and depend upon their Father. Jesus is not offering a religious construction project through which proud people earn eternal life.

He is describing the response of trust. If we believe Jesus knows the Father, understands the human heart, and speaks truth about the kingdom, we act upon His words. Refusal to obey eventually reveals that another authority remains on the throne.

Foundations Are Formed by Repeated Choices

A foundation is not laid through one emotional moment. It is formed as Jesus’ words reach ordinary decisions: telling the truth when deception would be easier, reconciling when pride prefers distance, praying without performance, giving without applause, refusing revenge, seeking God’s kingdom before anxiety, and examining ourselves before judging others.

None of these acts makes us the Savior. They reveal where we are building.

The Storm Will Come

Jesus does not invite us to pretend that obedience prevents suffering. Rain falls on both houses. The storm tests what prosperity can conceal.

Some foundations appear reliable while health, approval, money, relationships, and plans remain intact. But created things cannot bear ultimate weight. When they shift—or when every life finally stands before God—the foundation is revealed.

Begin with One Step

The scale of Jesus’ teaching can feel overwhelming. Do not turn that feeling into another form of delay. Ask where His words are presently clearest and your resistance is presently strongest.

Then take one honest step. Forgive. Tell the truth. End the hidden compromise. Pray. Reconcile. Give. Seek first the kingdom. Ask for help. Obedience begins where Jesus’ authority becomes more than an idea.

We began this journey with the question, “Who do you say that I am?” Matthew 7 shows that our answer eventually becomes visible in the foundation upon which we build.

Grace for the Builder

Taking one step does not mean pretending that obedience is effortless. Jesus’ disciples repeatedly failed, misunderstood, and needed correction. The answer was not to abandon His words but to return to Him. When obedience exposes weakness, bring that weakness to the One who commands. Ask for mercy, help, and a heart willing to act. The foundation is Jesus’ authoritative word, not confidence in your own flawless performance.

Consider this

What concrete act of obedience would demonstrate that Jesus—not convenience or self-rule—is your foundation?

Respond

Select one command from Matthew 5–7, write down one specific action it requires, and begin it today.

His work traces how Jesus reveals Himself through His own words, actions, conflicts, claims, compassion, suffering, death, and resurrection. Rather than beginning with religious labels or inherited assumptions, Waroal presses readers back into the text of the Gospels, asking what Jesus Himself says, shows, demands, promises, and fulfills. He is especially concerned with the unfolding logic of Jesus’ mission: the Son sent by the Father, the arrival of the kingdom, the call to repentance and faith, the authority to forgive sins, the necessity of the cross, and the vindication of the resurrection. His writing seeks to help readers see that the Gospel is not merely an idea to admire, but the announcement of who Jesus is and what He came to accomplish. Waroal writes for seekers, skeptics, new believers, and serious students of Scripture who want to encounter Jesus according to Jesus.
