The Question Jesus Still Asks

Day 1 of 365 · Episode 1 — The Question You Cannot Avoid

Matthew 16:13–17

Central truth

Jesus makes His identity the decisive question every hearer must answer.

There are questions we can postpone because they do not alter the direction of our lives. Jesus asked a question that cannot remain in that category.

Watch: The Question Jesus Still Asks

Watch the companion video, then continue reading to examine the biblical testimony in its full context.

Near Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples what people were saying about the Son of Man. Their answers were respectful: John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or another prophet. The public did not necessarily dismiss Jesus. Many placed Him among the most significant voices in Israel’s history.

But admiration was not an adequate answer.

Jesus Makes the Question Personal

Jesus turned from public opinion to personal confession: “But who do you say that I am?”

The word you changes everything. Jesus did not ask the disciples to produce another survey of popular beliefs. They had walked with Him. They had heard His teaching, watched His works, and seen His authority. Now they had to answer for themselves.

We often keep Jesus at a safe distance by discussing what other people believe about Him. We compare traditions, analyze religious institutions, or repeat descriptions such as teacher, prophet, reformer, revolutionary, or spiritual guide. Those conversations may be useful, but they cannot answer the question Jesus actually asks.

Peter’s Answer

Peter replied, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.”

“Christ” is not Jesus’ surname. It means the Messiah—the promised and anointed King. Peter was saying that Jesus stood at the center of God’s purposes and promises. Calling Him the Son of the living God went beyond polite respect. Peter identified Jesus by His unique relationship with the Father.

Jesus did not reduce Peter’s confession to an interesting personal viewpoint. He called Peter blessed and said that this recognition had been revealed by the Father.

The Journey Begins Here

This 365-day journey does not begin by asking which religious label you carry. It begins where Jesus began: Who do you say He is?

You are not being asked to manufacture certainty before examining the evidence. You are being invited to listen carefully, follow the Gospel accounts, and allow Jesus’ own words and actions to define the question.

For today, resist the temptation to answer too quickly. Let the question stand before you with its full force: Who do you say that Jesus is?

Consider this

If Jesus asked you today, “Who do you say that I am?” what would your answer reveal about the Jesus you actually believe in?

Respond

Ask God for the honesty to set aside inherited labels and begin examining Jesus through His own words.
