Build Your Life on My Words

Two people build houses. From a distance, both structures may appear stable. The decisive difference remains hidden beneath the surface.

Then the rain falls. Floodwaters rise. Winds strike. One house remains. The other collapses—and Jesus says its fall is great.

The Storm Reveals the Foundation

Jesus does not promise that the wise builder avoids the storm. Both houses are tested. Following Jesus is not a guarantee of painless circumstances, uninterrupted success, or protection from every earthly loss.

The promise is deeper: a life founded upon hearing and doing His words will stand when the true test comes.

The storm may include the pressures that expose what presently holds us together. But Jesus’ conclusion also looks beyond temporary difficulty. The Sermon on the Mount repeatedly points toward God’s final evaluation. The foundation must hold not only when life feels unstable, but when every life stands before God.

The Danger of Hearing Only

The foolish builder is not described as someone who never heard Jesus. He hears the same words as the wise builder. His failure is refusing to act upon them.

Information can create a false sense of spiritual safety. We may consume sermons, articles, podcasts, videos, and daily readings without surrendering a single protected area of life. Jesus does not confuse exposure with discipleship.

Hearing matters because we cannot obey words we have never received. But genuine hearing moves toward trust and action.

A Foundation, Not an Addition

Jesus does not offer Himself as decorative inspiration for a structure built on something else. His words must become the foundation.

That challenges foundations such as achievement, money, reputation, control, political identity, religious performance, romantic love, or personal autonomy. Any created thing asked to carry the weight of ultimate meaning will eventually fail.

Day 7 brings the first week to a practical conclusion. We began with Jesus asking who you say He is. Now He asks what you will do with His words.

A confession that never reaches the foundation remains incomplete. The wise response is not merely to call Jesus authoritative. It is to build where He tells us the rock is.
