See what happened when people met Jesus.
A man runs to Jesus, kneels, and asks, “Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?” He is serious enough to seek Jesus publicly, but the conversation soon reaches the one thing he does not want to surrender.
Watch: The One Thing This Successful Man Refused to Give Up.
Watch the companion video, then continue reading to examine the biblical testimony in its full context.
You Know the Commandments.
Jesus names commandments concerning human relationships. The man says he has kept them from his youth. Mark then gives an important detail: Jesus looks at him and loves him.
One Thing You Lack.
Jesus tells him to sell what he has, give to the poor, gain treasure in heaven, and follow Him. The man goes away sorrowful because he has great possessions.
How Difficult for the Wealthy.
Jesus warns His disciples about the spiritual danger of riches. Their astonishment grows until they ask, “Then who can be saved?”
Impossible With Man.
Jesus’ answer reaches beyond one wealthy man: with human beings salvation is impossible, but not with God. The encounter exposes rival trust and directs hope away from self-sufficiency toward God.
Consider this.
What does this encounter reveal about Jesus?
Respond.
Read Mark 10:17–31 and notice what Jesus exposes beneath an apparently sincere question.
