Yesterday Jesus showed servant-shaped love; today, at the same final meal, He explains the saving meaning of His approaching death.

Jesus gathers with the disciples for Passover knowing betrayal is already moving toward Him. During the meal, He takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to them: “Take, eat; this is my body.”
The Cup and the Covenant.
Then Jesus takes a cup, gives thanks, and tells them all to drink from it. He calls it “my blood of the covenant,” language that places His coming death inside God’s saving purposes.
Poured Out for Many.
Jesus does not describe His death merely as an example of courage or the tragic end of a teacher. He says His blood is poured out “for many.”
For the Forgiveness of Sins.
Matthew includes Jesus’ explicit purpose: forgiveness of sins. Before the arrest and crucifixion, Jesus interprets what His death means.
Until I Drink It New.
Jesus also looks beyond death to the Father’s kingdom. The meal holds together sacrifice, forgiveness, covenant, and future hope as Jesus deliberately approaches the cross.
Tomorrow, listen carefully to Jesus’ words over the bread and cup without reducing them to familiar ritual.
