Read the exact words Jesus said.

Central truth · Listen

Jesus says that God's house should be a place of prayer for all nations, rather than a refuge for wrongdoers.

Verified Scripture is unavailable here. No other language or edition has been substituted.

Yesterday we watched Jesus cleanse the temple; today His own scriptural words explain the meaning of that action.

“Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’?” Jesus frames His action with Scripture rather than personal irritation. The issue is what God intended His house to be.

My House.

Jesus quotes Isaiah, where God welcomes those who seek Him and describes His house as a place of prayer for all peoples. The temple’s purpose is larger than commerce, convenience, or institutional self-preservation.

You Have Made It.

Jesus then shifts from divine purpose to human responsibility: “you have made it a den of robbers.” The contrast is deliberate. What God intended and what people produced are not the same thing.

A Den of Robbers.

The phrase comes from Jeremiah’s rebuke of people who practiced injustice and then treated the temple as a place of security. Jesus’ words therefore reach beyond transactions to the moral contradiction of corrupt worship.

Let His Words Interpret His Actions.

The overturned tables are dramatic, but Jesus does not leave the meaning to imagination. Scripture explains the confrontation: worship belongs to God and must not become a refuge for exploitation.

Tomorrow, consider more carefully what this authority over worship reveals about Jesus Himself.

Consider this.

Which words of Jesus must govern your reading?

Listen closely

Listen to Jesus’ scriptural diagnosis of worship that has lost its God-centered purpose.
